Jefferson County residents who will not be able to go to their polling place on Election Day may vote absentee beginning six weeks prior to an election.

If you received an absentee ballot, do not take it to the poll on Election Day!

Voters may request absentee ballots from the County Clerk/Election Authority in person, by mail or by fax.

Requests Absentee Ballots on Behalf of a Relative

The following relatives may complete an absentee ballot application on behalf of the voter who wishes to vote absentee:

  • Brother
  • Child
  • Daughter-in-law
  • Father-in-law
  • Grandchild
  • Grandparent
  • Mother-in-law
  • Parent
  • Sister
  • Son-in-law
  • Spouse

No family member can leave the elections office with a ballot. We are required by law to mail the ballot to the voter.

Requirements & Restrictions

  • Absentee ballot applications must be received by the 2nd Wednesday prior to any election in order to receive a ballot by mail.
  • An application can be as simple as a note written on a plain sheet of paper that includes the name(s) of the person(s) requesting the absentee ballot(s), the address of the voter(s), the address where the ballot(s) are to be mailed, the reason for voting absentee, and most importantly the signature(s) of the person(s) requesting the absentee ballot(s).
  • Applications for an absentee ballot should never be sent anywhere except to the County Clerk’s office. Please do not send the request to city hall or the library.
