Request for Absentee Ballot

Requesting an Absentee Ballot

Voters may request absentee ballots from the County Clerk/Election Authority in person, by mail or by fax. Relatives within the first degree (parents and children) may complete an absentee ballot application, in person in our office, on behalf of the voter who wishes to vote absentee.

Note: The Department of the County Clerk is the only government department authorized to accept absentee ballot requests. Absentee ballot applications must be sent to this office by the deadline to be valid. Requests may be made by:

  • Fax: 636-797-5360
  • Mail:
    P.O. Box 100
    Hillsboro, MO 63050
  • In person in our office at:
    Jefferson County Administration Building
    729 Maple Street
    Hillsboro, MO 63050

Once an application has been received, a voter can expect to receive his ballot in about 2 to 4 days. Our office typically sends the ballot through the mail on the day of that we receive the request.

Notes

Per Missouri Law, an application (also known as a ’request’) for an absentee ballot must be completed and returned to the County Clerk before a ballot may be mailed. The application must contain the signature of each voter who is requesting a ballot.

If the voter fails to return the application, the voter may then go in person to the poll on election day. The election judges will have a ballot for the voter.

Exceptions to Notarization Requirement

If you have questions, please contact us at 636-797-5486.If a voter is requesting a ballot due to health reasons, the absentee ballot envelope does not need to be notarized. A voter should follow the instructions that are included along with the ballot and then return the ballot to the County Clerk no later than 7 pm on Election Day.

Permanent Absentee List

A voter may also request that his or her name be placed on the ’Permanent Absentee List’. This list is to assist persons with permanent disabilities in the exercise of their voting rights.

Send request to:
Jeannie Goff, County Clerk
P.O. Box 100
Hillsboro, MO 63050

Once a voter completes the request to be placed on the ’permanent absentee list’, he or she will receive an absentee application for each election. This application is sent to the voter by County Clerk's office. This is the voter’s written permission to send the actual ballot to the voter.

Absentee Ballot

The voter should fill out the application and return it promptly to the County Clerk. The Department of the County Clerk will send the absentee ballot to the voter making the request.

If you have received an absentee ballot, do not take it to the poll on Election Day!

No postage is required to mail your ballot back to the Department of the County Clerk.
